Helen is a Tax Accountant who specialises in income tax and capital gains tax matters for individuals and trusts, working with the individual as well as their Attorneys, Deputies and Executors as well as the trustees and beneficiaries of settlements and trusts.

Helen typically advises clients on:

  • The preparation of Self-Assessment Tax Returns and Repayment Claims, both for current tax years as well as earlier years where omissions or errors have been identified or where returns have not been submitted in a timely manner and advising on the associated tax liabilities;
  • Computing the sums that can be paid to trust beneficiaries in order to minimise any tax liabilities for both themselves and the trust;
  • Finalising the income tax liability/repayment up to the date of death of an individual and arranging for it to be paid by or refunded to the estate by HM Revenue & Customs (“HMRC”);
  • Computing the tax liability for the period of administration and reaching agreement on this with HMRC including preparation of the appropriate paperwork (including Self-Assessment Tax Returns) for both HMRC and the beneficiaries;
  • Computation and advice of the potential capital gain arising on the sale of a property, including the implications of appropriation of the property out of an estate or trust before sale;
  • Preparation and submission to HMRC of the 60-day Residential Property Capital Gains Tax Return including amendments to the initial return, and advice on incorporation of these details into the Self-Assessment Tax Return
  • Dealing with the registration of trusts and estates with the Trust Registration Service including annual updates, claiming the trust on behalf of trustees and both opening and closing the trust’s record.

Helen is known for her eye for detail and clients appreciate the fact that she keeps them informed of progress and outstanding information.

Recent examples of matters dealt with by Helen include:

  • Advising on how to minimise the capital gains tax arising on the sale of 2 properties within an estate to 6 different beneficiaries and assisting with the relevant paperwork required by HMRC;
  • Dealing with undisclosed rental income for a number of years and reaching agreement with HMRC under the HMRC Let Property Campaign
  • Arranging with HRMC for a State Pension lump sum payment that related to a number of different tax years to be treated in the most beneficial way for the recipient
