Guiding you through a Civil partnership Dissolution

Civil partnerships represent a significant legal union between two individuals, offering many of the same rights, responsibilities, and protections that marriage does. Initially established in 2004 to give same-sex couples a way to have their relationships legally recognised, this form of legal union was expanded in 2020 to welcome heterosexual couples as well.

Unfortunately, like marriages, some civil partnerships may not work out and the couple choose to separate.

The process to address these situations is designed to straightforward and fair, mirroring the procedures in place for divorce. This ensures that all parties have a clear path to follow should they need to take such steps.

Dissolution is the term used to describe the termination of a civil partnership, and as long as you have been in a civil partnership for at least one year, either partner can apply for dissolution.

Since April 6, 2022, the law recognises only one ground for dissolution, similar to divorce: the civil partnership must have “irretrievably broken down.” These legal changes streamline the process, making it easier for you to understand your options and take action when necessary.
